"The idea was to create a place built like a Roman house — intimate in atmosphere but open to neighborhood life. Casa Monti invites Romans to step inside and enjoy." — Laura Gonzalez
The bright yellow Fiat 500 parked outside on Via Panisperna is not an accident. It is a statement of intent. Casa Monti, the first Italian property from the Leitmotiv group, opened in 2023 inside a restored 18th-century palazzo in the heart of Monti — Rome's oldest and most bohemian quartiere, just ten minutes' walk from the Colosseum. The hotel was designed entirely by French interior designer Laura Gonzalez, who conceived it not as a luxury hotel but as an artist's residence opened to the world. The result is 36 rooms and one of the most discussed lobbies in contemporary Rome.
THE PROPERTY
Via Panisperna is one of Rome's oldest streets — named for the bread and ham that medieval monks distributed here — and it has spent centuries absorbing the energy of the Monti district around it. Glassworkers, ironworkers, woodworkers, vintage boutiques, and wine bars line its gently sloping length. Casa Monti didn't arrive in this neighborhood. It grew out of it. The Leitmotiv group, better known for La Fantaisie in Paris, restored the six-story, 18th-century palazzo with the explicit brief that the hotel should feel like a Roman home — intimate, idiosyncratic, and open to the street outside.
LOBBY CULTURE
The lobby is where Laura Gonzalez makes her argument. Hand-painted frescoes of trees cover the walls. Seating is upholstered in her signature maximalist clash — stripes against florals against rich jewel tones. Art and travel books line every surface alongside antiques, Giacometti lithographs, and black-and-white photographs of Rome. The scent — Susanne Kaufmann's custom blend for the hotel, honeysuckle and herbal alpine — hits you at the door and doesn't leave. A stage-like staircase embellished with Greco-Roman motifs leads upward. The lobby bar, with its dark wood, zebra-print upholstery, and mirrored ceiling, is where you want to end up before dinner. This is a lobby that rewards staying in.
DESIGN NOTES
Gonzalez's reference point was sprezzatura — the Italian concept of effortless style where everything works together even though each individual element shouldn't. The color palette runs from sage green to terracotta red to azure blue to saffron yellow, shifting room to room like a Cinecittà film reel. No two rooms are the same. Boldly patterned upholstered headboards. Bespoke striped wallpaper topped with custom artworks. Sculptural Gonzalez-designed lampshades. Bathrooms tiled in Pompeian red with walk-in showers and Susanne Kaufmann products. A ceramic fireplace by Giuseppe Ducrot that converts the domestic hearth into a baroque sculpture. Marshall speakers. CBD gummies on the pillow. Every detail has been calibrated for pleasure.
BAR & SHARED SPACES
Three spaces define the communal life of the hotel. The ground floor bar and patio is where mornings begin — pistachio croissants, the chef's maritozzo, espresso at the counter, and a terrace on Via Cimarra for when the sun arrives. The restaurant, run by Sicilian chef Umberto Tuccio, serves Roman comfort food elevated without being precious: gricia, tonnarelli cacio e pepe, fettuccine with duck ragù, seasonal zucchini blossoms, and parmigiana with a twist. The rooftop bar above is the neighborhood's best seat — a cosmopolitan prism where the light changes all day and the cocktail list draws its names from the craftsmen of Monti. Order La Fioraia and stay for the view across the red rooftops.
Casa Monti is what happens when a designer is given full license and the brief is essentially: make it feel like you live here. Laura Gonzalez didn't decorate a hotel. She built an argument for a certain kind of life — one where the walls have stories, the scent is specific, and the rooftop is the best seat in the neighborhood. Monti was already one of Rome's great quarters. Casa Monti made it a destination.

ROOMS THAT MATTER
The 26 rooms and 10 suites continue the design language of the lobby with a calmer, more cocooned energy. Some have private terraces. All have the tall, skinny windows that frame Via Panisperna like a still from a Roman film. The Junior Suite is the right choice — more space for the maximalist layering to breathe, a bathroom tiled floor to ceiling in Pompeian red, and enough personality to make you want to stay an extra night. The spa on the upper floors offers treatments guided by Susanne Kaufmann's plant-based philosophy, with a rooftop that gives the impression of entering Rome from above.
THE VERDICT
Casa Monti is a hotel that has a point of view — and defends it on every floor. Laura Gonzalez built something that feels genuinely Italian and genuinely her own simultaneously, which is the hardest trick in hotel design. The neighborhood is right, the lobby is right, the rooftop is right, and the rooms make you not want to leave for the Colosseum even though it's fifteen minutes away. At 36 rooms, it will always feel like a secret. Book it before it stops feeling like one.
Editor's Note
Rome's most considered boutique. Every surface has an intention. Every room has a story. The rooftop has the best view in Monti.
The Lobby Edit Score
9.1
/ 10
Laura Gonzalez's maximalism earns its score because it never tips into excess. The lobby culture is warm, the design is rigorous, and the neighborhood does the rest.

Sense of Place
What Casa Monti does to a morning in Monti — not what it looks like, but what it feels like when the scent arrives before the lobby does.
SIGNATURE SCENT
Honeysuckle and herbal alpine — Susanne Kaufmann's custom blend. Calming, specific, impossible to place
LOBBY ENERGY
Design-literate Europeans, Roman creatives, slow travelers. A crowd that chose Monti deliberately
MATERIAL CHARACTER
Frescoed walls, Pompeian red tile, zebra print, custom lampshades — maximalism with a point of view
TIME OF DAY
Morning belongs to the patio. Evening belongs to the rooftop. The hour between belongs to the bar
Casa Monti Lobby Culture Score: 9.2. The frescoes, the scent, and the staircase make this the most considered arrival in Rome. You don't pass through this lobby. You stay in it.

Where Roman Hotel Luxury Lives
The lobby is the hotel's thesis. Frescoed walls, clashing patterns, Giacometti lithographs, and a scent that arrives before the decor does. Laura Gonzalez built a Roman home and opened it to the world. The bar, the patio, and the rooftop are where that home becomes a neighborhood.

What To Do
01
Walk to the Colosseum
Fifteen minutes on foot. Buy tickets in advance and go at opening. The walk back through Monti, stopping at a bar for an espresso, is the best part.
03
Mercato Monti
he neighborhood's weekend vintage and design market at Via Leonina 46. Emerging designers, local artisans, and the kind of finds you can't replicate online. Saturday and Sunday only.
05
Roman Forum & Palatine Hill
Adjacent to the Colosseum and consistently underrated. Buy the combined ticket and allow two hours. The views from Palatine Hill over the Forum are among the best in Rome.
02
Wander Via Panisperna
The hotel's own street is one of Rome's oldest. Glassworkers, woodworkers, vintage boutiques, and aperitivo bars line its length. Set out with no plan and no deadline.
04
Aperitivo at Piazza della Madonna dei Monti
The neighborhood's central piazza, where locals gather at dusk with a Negroni or a spritz and no particular reason to be anywhere else. The most Roman hour of the day.
06
Susanne Kaufmann Spa
Book a treatment at the hotel's own spa before you check out. The plant-based protocols are quieter than the lobby and a good reason to build in a late checkout.
