"Three Michelin Keys on a cobblestone street in SoHo. The Crosby Bar runs morning through last call, and the screening room beneath has 107 orange leather chairs. Kit Kemp's most considered New York work."
Tim and Kit Kemp opened the Crosby Street Hotel in 2009, on a cobblestone side street in SoHo, as the North American debut of Firmdale Hotels. The building was purpose-built but designed to suit the cast-iron industrial character of its block, with soaring ceilings and warehouse-scale windows facing a courtyard garden. Kit Kemp designed every room, hallway, and public space herself, collaborating with British designers Christopher Farr Cloth and Andrew Martin and filling the building with commissioned artworks including a Fernando Botero cat sculpture, Jaume Plensa's 10-foot metal head, and work by Justine Smith and Anselm Kiefer.
THE PROPERTY
Crosby Street sits between Broadway and Lafayette in the heart of SoHo, a block from the Prada store and four blocks from the Holland Tunnel. Once a manufacturing quarter defined by cast-iron facades and freight elevators, it is now the most concentrated luxury design district in New York. The hotel occupies a purpose-built 11-story structure with a courtyard garden on Lafayette Street, a sculpture garden exclusive to guests, and a cobblestone entrance that announces the hotel's intentions before the doors open.
LOBBY CULTURE
The lobby is one of the most considered hotel arrivals in New York. Soaring warehouse ceilings, large windows flooding the space with light, and commissioned art at every turn including the 10-foot metal head installation by Jaume Plensa. The Crosby Bar at one end of the lobby has a pewter bar, oak floors, and a private garden terrace beyond tall warehouse-style windows. The residents' Drawing Room at the other end has fireplaces and deep sofas. A 107-seat screening room hosts film nights and cultural events. LEED Gold certified, with a rooftop garden and chickens.
DESIGN NOTES
Kit Kemp's design philosophy is expressed entirely at the Crosby: bold color, mixed pattern, and a conviction that interiors should feel inhabited rather than installed. Every room is individually designed, no two identical, with floor-to-ceiling windows, custom headboards, and commissioned artworks specific to each space. Rik Rak amenities, designed by Kemp herself. Crown molding and period details in the suites. Statement wallpaper that guests routinely ask to source. The building has been continuously refreshed over fifteen years while the core sensibility has remained entirely itself.
BAR & SHARED SPACES
The Crosby Bar is one of the most consistently enjoyed hotel bars in New York: long pewter bar, seasonal menu, colorful striped bench seating, rounded by a wooden Dodo bird sculpture presiding from above. The kitchen is led by Executive Chef Ari Nieminen, with most produce from the hotel's rooftop kitchen garden. The Sculpture Garden is a guest-only outdoor oasis accessible from the restaurant. The Drawing Room serves as the library and quiet lounge above. A 107-seat screening room with Poltrona Frau orange leather chairs hosts film nights and private events in the lower level.
The Crosby Street Hotel earned three Michelin Keys, which is the highest honor the guide awards hotels. It deserved them in 2009 and deserves them now. Kit Kemp's SoHo flagship is the hotel that proved a bold point of view could outlast a trend.

ROOMS THAT MATTER
The 86 rooms and suites are spread across 11 floors, each designed individually by Kit Kemp. The Meadow Suite on the second floor opens onto its own private American woodland meadow, planted with more than 50 varieties of flowering plants. The Crosby Suites on the upper floors have high ceilings, full-length windows, and uninterrupted views across Lower Manhattan. Every room feels like it was made for someone specific, which is rarer than it sounds.
THE VERDICT
The most considered boutique hotel in New York, fifteen years in and still earning it. Three Michelin Keys, a screening room, a sculpture garden, and a bar that fills every night with a crowd that chose this address deliberately. Kit Kemp's SoHo original.
Editor's Note
Three Michelin Keys and still the standard. The bar, the garden, and 86 rooms no two alike.
