The 1947 Saxony, reimagined through Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin's lens. Juan Gatti's murals in the Cathedral, Damien Hirst's gilded mammoth in the garden, Faena Red velvet, and Francis Mallmann's fire at Los Fuegos.
Faena Miami Beach opened in December 2015 inside the Saxony, the 1947 hotel George Sax built and Roy F. France designed, once called the Queen of Collins Avenue, where Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin performed. Alan Faena and Len Blavatnik, partners since transforming Buenos Aires's Puerto Madero docklands, reimagined it as the anchor of the Faena District. Faena brought in director Baz Luhrmann and Academy Award-winning designer Catherine Martin to shape the hotel's narrative, and every detail runs through their cinematic lens.
THE PROPERTY
Collins Avenue at 32nd Street sits in Mid-Beach, the link between South Beach and the northern neighborhoods, and the Faena District has made it a destination in its own right. Around the hotel: Rem Koolhaas and OMA's Faena Forum, Faena Bazaar in the restored Atlantic Beach Hotel, and the smaller Casa Faena. The hotel fronts 100,000 square feet of sugar-white sand under Faena's candy-striped umbrellas. It holds Forbes Five-Star status.
LOBBY CULTURE
Walk in under Juan Gatti's Cathedral, eight murals tall enough to tilt your head back, painted in the hothouse colors of a tropical myth. The Living Room beyond is pure 1950s Miami Beach: leopard print on the couches, red velvet on everything else, and a performer at the microphone every night of the week. Service is built around the individual guest, with Experience Managers, on-call butlers, and a car and driver at no charge.
DESIGN NOTES
The rooms feel staged. Luhrmann and Martin worked the building like a film set, and the result reads as Art Deco filtered through old European grandeur: warm hardwood underfoot, Faena Red velvet, and bathrooms tiled a cool blue. Gatti, whom Faena calls its Michelangelo, shares the walls with Jeff Koons and Alberto Garutti. Out in the Mammoth Garden, Damien Hirst's Gone But Not Forgotten stands three meters tall in gold. Frank Pollaro furnished the Penthouse in ivory and beige with gold and black accents.
BAR & SHARED SPACES
Los Fuegos by Francis Mallmann cooks over open fire in the spirit of an Argentine asado. Pao by Paul Qui serves modern Asian cuisine, and El Secreto Omakase seats six for a Tokyo-style sushi and Kyoto-style kaiseki menu. Saxony Bar, with its own entrance, is the late-night speakeasy, and La Cava dines privately among the wine collection at a Pollaro table created with Brad Pitt. The 150-seat Faena Theater, modeled on Europe's opera houses, runs a rotating program of cabaret, comedy, jazz, and resident productions.
Faena Miami Beach is the most completely realized hotel concept in the United States. A decade after opening, the conviction holds: Gatti's murals, Hirst's mammoth, Mallmann's fire, a 150-seat theater, and a 22,000-square-foot healing house on the sand. Alan Faena built a world here, and it still works.

ROOMS THAT MATTER
The 179 rooms and suites start with the 463-square-foot Partial Ocean View Room and climb through suites of one to four bedrooms with ocean and city views. Across the accommodations, the Luhrmann and Martin vocabulary holds: hardwood floors, Faena Red velvet, and blue-tiled baths. The Saxony Suite keeps the old hotel's name. At the top sits the Faena Penthouse, two stories and 14,507 square feet, with five bedrooms, a balcony off each, and Frank Pollaro furniture throughout.
THE VERDICT
The most completely realized hotel concept in the United States. A decade in, Faena Miami Beach has held the conviction of its opening, which is the hardest thing in hospitality. Gatti's Cathedral, Hirst's mammoth, Mallmann's fire, and a theater built like an opera house make this the standard for theatrical luxury.
Editor's Note
The most completely realized hotel concept in America. Gatti's Cathedral, Los Fuegos, and the Faena Theater make the case.
