"Forbes Five-Star two years running. The Dante Beverly Hills rooftop. A spa with a wellness mineral pool. And a lobby that manages to feel residential without trying. The Maybourne has figured out how to be Beverly Hills without becoming a caricature of it."
The building opened in 2008 under the Montage flag, one block east of Rodeo Drive, in the heart of what Beverly Hills calls the Golden Triangle. Montage built it from the ground up during the financial downturn — an act of financial confidence that, in retrospect, read the moment correctly. The Maybourne Group, owned by Qatar's royal family and better known for Claridge's, the Connaught, and the Berkeley in London, acquired the property and reoriented it toward a more specifically European model of luxury: quieter, more material, and significantly less interested in announcing itself.
THE PROPERTY
Canon Drive sits one block east of Rodeo Drive in the Beverly Hills Golden Triangle — the three-block radius that contains more luxury retail per square meter than any address in California. The hotel occupies a purpose-built structure with a gracious, elegant lobby and an interior that draws on Euro-Asian influences without committing hard to either. The garden adjacent to Beverly Canon Gardens provides the hotel with outdoor seating that functions as a European piazza in the California sun. The location puts guests within walking distance of the Rodeo Drive boutiques, Spago, and most of the restaurants that matter in central Beverly Hills.
LOBBY CULTURE
The lobby is residential without trying too hard — which is harder than it looks in Beverly Hills. Collectible artworks throughout. Mid-century furnishings with genuine provenance. The Maybourne Bar operates as the social center of the ground floor, serving classic and innovative cocktails from the head mixologist alongside aperitivo-style bites. The Whiskey Bar houses one of the more extensive private collections of rare whisky in the city. The lobby culture is managed carefully: the hotel knows its clientele and curates accordingly, which is why it consistently attracts the kind of guests who are not photographing themselves.
DESIGN NOTES
The 204 rooms and 57 suites run in a mid-century direction that suits the California light. Egyptian cotton sheets, premium bedding, and down comforters throughout. Sumptuous marble bathrooms. Collectible artworks in each room, chosen rather than assigned. The suites offer bespoke in-room experiences — live piano, ensuite cocktail service — alongside access to BMW i7 sedans for exploring the city. The design prioritizes texture and material quality over spectacle, which is the right choice for a property that competes on repeat visits rather than first impressions.
BAR & SHARED SPACES
Dante Beverly Hills on the ninth-floor rooftop is the hotel's most public statement — the first West Coast outpost of the New York aperitivo institution, with panoramic city views, a cocktail program built on natural wine and Italian spirits, and a menu that treats the small plate as a serious form. The Terrace below overlooks Beverly Canon Gardens with a Mediterranean-influenced dinner menu and the charm of a European piazza. The Maybourne Café handles all-day casual dining with pastries, pressed juices, and good coffee in the lobby. The 20,000-square-foot spa includes a wellness mineral pool, newly renovated fitness facility, and a recovery zone.
The Maybourne is the most considered hotel in Beverly Hills. Where its neighbors lean into the theater of luxury, the Maybourne leans into the texture of it — collectible artworks, mid-century furnishings with serious provenance, and a spa that takes 20,000 square feet seriously. Dante Beverly Hills on the rooftop is the first West Coast outpost of the New York institution and already earns the slot. The BMW house car is a good touch. The service is consistently the best in the neighborhood.

ROOMS THAT MATTER
The 57 suites are the strongest argument for the Maybourne over its neighbors. Each one offers something specific — a terrace, an extra bedroom, a particular view — alongside the bespoke experience options that the hotel builds its suite program around. The Hollywood Suite is the most culturally specific room in the building, named without irony and executed with genuine restraint. BMW i7 house car access for suite guests makes exploring Beverly Hills and West Hollywood practical rather than theatrical.
THE VERDICT
Beverly Hills's most considered hotel, and the one most likely to bring you back. The Maybourne understands that the neighborhood's best guests are not impressed by size or spectacle — they want material quality, specific design, and service that anticipates rather than reacts. Dante on the rooftop, the spa, and the suite program make this the strongest complete hotel stay in the city.
Editor's Note
Beverly Hills's most considered address. Dante on the rooftop and the spa alone justify the rate.
