Georgian townhouses in Fitzrovia, lined in oak and walnut. Berners Tavern under Grand Central-inspired chandeliers. The Punch Room behind the lobby. A Penthouse wrapped in three terraces. London's most complete design hotel.
The London EDITION opened in September 2013 in a row of Georgian townhouses on Berners Street in Fitzrovia, the former Berners Hotel, and marked Ian Schrager's return to London after fifteen years. The Ian Schrager Company design studio worked with Yabu Pushelberg on the interiors: a restored stucco ceiling in the lobby, an Ingo Maurer silver sphere above it, and 173 rooms paneled in walnut or light oak with a cabin-like calm akin to a private yacht. Jason Atherton's Berners Tavern opened with the hotel and became one of the most talked-about restaurant rooms in London that year.
THE PROPERTY
Berners Street runs north from Oxford Street into Fitzrovia, on the edge of Soho and a short walk from Tottenham Court Road and the British Museum. The surrounding blocks are dense with creative industry: agencies, architecture practices, and the media companies that have occupied Fitzrovia since the mid-20th century. The address gives the hotel a local crowd of Londoners who come for Berners Tavern and the Punch Room whether or not they are staying.
LOBBY CULTURE
The lobby is the social heart of the building. A polished silver sphere by Ingo Maurer hangs from the restored stucco ceiling, above a fireplace, a billiard table, and a lobby bar that fills from early evening. Berners Tavern opens directly off the lobby, a grand dining room with stacked framed art and chandeliers inspired by Grand Central Station, drawing Fitzrovia locals alongside hotel guests through every service. At the back of the building, the reservations-only Punch Room continues the evening in fumed oak and candlelight.
DESIGN NOTES
The 173 rooms and suites are paneled in dark walnut or light oak over oak floors, creating the cabin-like feel of a private yacht. Each room carries a gold-framed portrait by Dutch photographer Hendrik Kerstens, whose images of his daughter borrow the light and composition of the Dutch masters. Christian Liaigre furnishings, George Smith tufted lounge chairs, and EDITION's Le Labo amenities in the signature Black Tea scent complete the rooms. The Penthouse is wrapped by three landscaped terraces with 360-degree views of the skyline.
BAR & SHARED SPACES
Berners Tavern, from Michelin-starred chef Jason Atherton, serves contemporary British cooking from breakfast through late supper in the hotel's most spectacular room: soaring ceilings, Grand Central-inspired chandeliers, and walls of framed artwork. The Punch Room, open Tuesday to Saturday from 5pm and by reservation only, is a fumed-oak den modeled on 19th-century London private clubs, with punches served by the glass or the bowl and the signature Milk Punch at its center. The Lobby Bar links the two.
The London EDITION has been the strongest design hotel in London for over a decade. Berners Tavern is one of Europe's great restaurant rooms. The Punch Room is the most specific hotel bar in London.

ROOMS THAT MATTER
The suite program sits above a base of rooms that run from 22 to 40 square meters. The Fitzrovia Suite at 44 square meters is the entry point, wood-paneled floor to ceiling. The Berners Suite at 49 square meters adds a separate living area and a large terrace over central London. The Terrace Suite at 79 square meters pairs an open sitting area with private outdoor space. The Premier Terrace Suite adds an oversized furnished terrace. The 195-square-meter Penthouse has three landscaped terraces, a dining room for ten, and a library.
THE VERDICT
London's most complete design hotel, more than a decade after opening. Berners Tavern remains one of the great restaurant rooms in Europe. The Punch Room is the most specific hotel bar in the city. The walnut-paneled rooms are among the most intimate in London. And the Fitzrovia address gives the hotel a genuine local crowd that most London hotels cannot attract.
Editor's Note
London's most complete design hotel. Berners Tavern and the Punch Room make the case over a decade later.
