A 1903 limestone tower on Broadway. Cecconi's and Little Ned on the ground floor. Ned's Club behind the reception and a rooftop terrace facing the Empire State Building. A members' club that lets you stay the night.
The Ned NoMad opened in summer 2022 at 1170 Broadway, inside the Johnston Building, a 12-story Beaux-Arts store and office building designed by Schickel & Ditmars and completed in 1903 for Caroline H. Johnston, a rare female property owner for the era. It housed the NoMad Hotel from 2012 to 2021. Soho House brought The Ned from London as its first international outpost, with interiors by Soho House Design and Stonehill Taylor. The building holds 167 bedrooms over ten floors, Cecconi's, Little Ned, and Ned's Club.
THE PROPERTY
Broadway at 28th Street places The Ned NoMad in the center of NoMad, two blocks north of Madison Square Park and within walking distance of the Flatiron Building, Chelsea, and the Garment District. The Johnston Building is a contributing property in the Madison Square North Historic District, its limestone facade turning the corner in a rounded bay that rises to a cupola. The address is quieter than Midtown and more central than SoHo.
LOBBY CULTURE
The reception is small and discreet by design. The social life of the building sits just beyond it. Cecconi's fills the ground floor from brunch through dinner and takes reservations from anyone. Little Ned, a cocktail bar with its own entrance on 28th Street, pours spirit-forward drinks alongside a raw bar and small plates, with a members' mezzanine above. Ned's Club Downstairs brings together the glass-ceilinged Atrium, the Library, the Elephant Bar, and the Snug, with live music taking over the Atrium in the evenings. It is reserved for members and hotel guests.
DESIGN NOTES
Soho House Design worked with Stonehill Taylor, the firm that converted the Johnston Building into the NoMad Hotel in 2012. The interiors draw on three references: the building itself, its 1920s life as offices for publishers, textile houses, and engineers, and the Tin Pan Alley glamour of the same decade. A custom terrazzo floor with Italian palladiana insets and hand-chipped black mosaic answers the building's original mosaic floors. Kate Bryan, Soho House's Head of Collections, curated A Different Century, more than 150 works responding to the building's history and Caroline Johnston's place in it.
BAR & SHARED SPACES
Cecconi's anchors the ground floor with hand-made pasta, pizza, and Northern Italian classics through brunch, lunch, aperitivo hour, and dinner. Little Ned runs a weekday Golden Hour of oysters, caviar, and classic cocktails. Members and hotel guests share Ned's Club, including The Dining Room, where Cecconi's favorites arrive with tableside service at dinner, subject to availability. The Magic Room, a second-floor events space with its own bar, stage, and terrace, hosts comedy and magic nights. Ned's Club Upstairs, open spring and summer, is a rooftop restaurant and terrace facing the Empire State Building.
The Ned London set the template: a historic building, a Cecconi's, and a members' club layered above a hotel. In NoMad the formula moves into Caroline Johnston's 1903 limestone tower, and the building does the work. The club is the point. The bedrooms are how you get in the door.

ROOMS THAT MATTER
The 167 bedrooms run across ten floors, from Crash Pads of around 300 square feet through Classic, Deluxe, and Grand rooms to Studios and Atrium Studios. Atrium Family rooms add two queens and atrium views. The suites carry the most distinctive details. The Salon Suite adds a separate living room at 540 square feet. The Rotunda Suite opens onto oversized bay windows. The Broadway Suite puts a dining room for six inside the building's rotunda. The duplex Johnston Terrace Suite is the largest, combining roughly 1,100 square feet indoors with a 700-square-foot private terrace.
THE VERDICT
Manhattan's most complete members' club hotel. A 1903 limestone tower on Broadway, Cecconi's on the ground floor, and a rooftop terrace facing the Empire State Building. The Ned London formula applied to the right New York building.
Editor's Note
Manhattan's most complete members' club hotel. Cecconi's, Little Ned, and a rooftop facing the Empire State Building.
