A 1926 Beaux-Arts building half a block from Central Park, refit by Martin Brudnizki with Murano chandeliers and silk walls. Casa Tua's first New York home on the ground floor. Corinthia's North American debut.
The Surrey opened in 1926 on East 76th Street, a white marble Beaux-Arts building between Fifth and Madison Avenues, half a block from Central Park. Bette Davis and John F. Kennedy both signed its guest book. The hotel closed in 2020. Owners Reuben Brothers kept the facade, brought in BKSK Architects for the renovation and Martin Brudnizki Design Studio for the interiors, and reopened it under the Corinthia flag in October 2024 with 70 rooms, 30 suites, and 14 private residences.
THE PROPERTY
East 76th Street between Fifth and Madison sits at the center of the Upper East Side. Central Park is half a block west. The Met is an eight-minute walk north on Fifth Avenue, and the newly reopened Frick Collection is seven minutes south at 70th Street. Madison Avenue's galleries and boutiques start at the corner. The renovation retained the building's historic white marble facade.
LOBBY CULTURE
The lobby is calm and residential, furnished like the front rooms of a townhouse. Next to it, the Lounge by Casa Tua serves coffee, light bites, and cocktails all day around a working fireplace, with cowhide chairs and stacks of coffee-table books. Casa Tua's restaurant runs from breakfast through dinner. Upstairs, its private members' club occupies the second floor.
DESIGN NOTES
Brudnizki, whose portfolio includes Annabel's in London and The Beekman in New York, gave the rooms a soft Art Deco register. Across the accommodations, Brudnizki works in soft blue, spring green, and terracotta, with silk wallcoverings, inlaid cabinetry, and Murano glass details. The four signature suites take their cues from Central Park's bridges, with crown moldings drawn from each bridge and its illustration inside the armoire. VISTO Gallery curated the art around New York artists from the 1920s onward.
BAR & SHARED SPACES
Casa Tua, from founders Miky and Leticia Herrera-Grendene, arrives in New York after Miami, Aspen, and Paris. Michele Bonan designed the rooms with Florentine influences and custom Italian furniture, and the kitchen cooks Italian and Mediterranean, with whole branzino for the table. The Surrey Spa by Sisley Paris runs two treatment rooms, a steam room, sauna, salt relaxation room, and sensorial shower, with an AMP-designed gym and a secluded outdoor terrace. The Black Rose Replumping Facial and Scalp Massage is exclusive to the hotel.
The Surrey reopened in October 2024 as Corinthia's first hotel in North America. Martin Brudnizki designed the 70 rooms and 30 suites, VISTO Gallery hung the walls with New York artists from Jasper Johns to Helen Frankenthaler, and Casa Tua brought its first New York outpost downstairs.

ROOMS THAT MATTER
The 70 rooms start at 315 square feet with Frette linens, marble baths, and Antica Farmacista amenities. The suites open with the courtyard-facing Junior Suite and rise through the Deluxe and Grand Deluxe Suites, up to 830 square feet with soaking tubs and room to dine. The Bethesda Grandeur, Pine Bank Bridge, and Greywacke Heritage signature suites fall between 1,200 and 1,300 square feet with a fireplace, a dining area, and a butler's pantry. The Surrey Suite, inspired by Bow Bridge, spans 2,130 square feet over two en-suite bedrooms.
THE VERDICT
The most considered hotel to open on the Upper East Side in a generation. Corinthia brought Brudnizki, Reuben Brothers kept the 1926 facade, and VISTO filled the suites with Jasper Johns and Helen Frankenthaler. Casa Tua gives the neighborhood a new room to be seen in. Half a block from Central Park, the Surrey is the hotel the Upper East Side was missing.
Editor's Note
The most considered hotel to open on the Upper East Side in a generation. Brudnizki's design and Casa Tua make the case.
