John Pawson built it from the ground up. A three-story travertine lobby cut to read as one stone. Ardor on the main level, a pool flush atop The Roof, and Sunset under 400 mirrored disco balls. The Strip's first true luxury hotel.
The West Hollywood EDITION opened in November 2019 at 9040 Sunset Boulevard, on the site of the restaurant Scandia, where Frank Sinatra once kept a private office upstairs. British architect John Pawson designed the building from the ground up: Western Red Cedar for the entry and its outsize front doors, Italian travertine for a three-story lobby matched so precisely that his team left the joints unfilled. The 190 rooms include 48 suites and two penthouses, with 20 residences above and their own hidden entrance. It is the only EDITION on the West Coast.
THE PROPERTY
The hotel sits at Doheny Drive and Sunset Boulevard, on the line where West Hollywood meets Beverly Hills at the western end of the Sunset Strip. The Roxy is a short walk east, with the Whisky a Go Go and The Viper Room beyond it, and The Troubadour a few blocks south. Above, the Bird Streets climb into the hills. The Roof looks out from the ocean at Santa Monica to the towers of downtown. The address holds two Los Angeles stories at once: Beverly Hills wellness and West Hollywood nightlife.
LOBBY CULTURE
The lobby is Pawson at his most exacting: Italian travertine walls rising three stories, a travertine pool table at the center, and Sterling Ruby's mobile SCALE (EDITION) overhead, built from a frying pan and a steel drum in homage to the diner and gas station that once stood on the block. On weekends the Lobby Bar fills with West Hollywood and Beverly Hills locals for Nils Schabert's Interlude cocktails and a round of billiards. An outdoor courtyard and fire feature close the far end of the room.
DESIGN NOTES
Pawson's material list is short and deliberate: Western Red Cedar at the entry, Italian travertine in the lobby, whitewashed Siberian Larch and a light neutral palette in the rooms. Floor-to-ceiling sliding screens filter the light and echo the timber screens around the ballroom. EDITION signatures such as freestanding tubs and Le Labo amenities carry through. The two 2,036-square-foot Penthouses switch to walnut paneling and hardwood floors, with private dining rooms and wraparound landscaped terraces.
BAR & SHARED SPACES
Ardor, on the main level, is Michelin Guide recommended: wood-fired California cooking from Chef Patricia Lalu, milkbread to start, steaks to share, and a garden terrace built for dining outdoors. The Roof is the second kitchen, with tacos, mariscos, and a deep agave list beside the pool and 72 seats under glass and beams. Below ground, Sunset revives the Strip's club history under more than 400 mirrored disco balls. The Forbes Five-Star spa is the only one in the EDITION collection.
The West Hollywood EDITION is the design hotel the Sunset Strip went without for decades. Pawson's travertine lobby is the most disciplined arrival in Los Angeles. The Roof sees from Santa Monica to downtown. And on a weekend night the lobby bar, Ardor, and Sunset downstairs work as one building.

ROOMS THAT MATTER
The 190 rooms share Pawson's palette of whitewashed Siberian Larch, floor-to-ceiling sliding screens, and Le Labo amenities. The Superior Suite is the entry point to the suite program, with floor-to-ceiling windows over West Hollywood. The Premier Suite adds space and a separate living room. The Premier Terrace Suite opens to an expansive wraparound terrace. The Superior Villa Suite's bedroom opens onto a large terrace facing the city and the Hollywood Hills. The two Penthouses run 2,036 square feet with walnut paneling and wraparound terraces.
THE VERDICT
The most architecturally considered hotel on the Sunset Strip. Pawson's travertine lobby, Ardor's wood-fired kitchen, the pool on The Roof, and Sunset under its disco balls make the West Hollywood EDITION a full night in one building. The design benchmark for the city.
Editor's Note
The most architecturally considered hotel on the Strip. Pawson's travertine lobby and the pool on The Roof.
